It's just before Little Fritz's parents' anniversary. First his father comes to him and makes him promise not to tell the secret about the gift, in exchange for 5 marks. Then his mother makes him promise the same, also for 5 marks. Both gifts are portraits of Little Fritz, and he collects the 10 marks for keeping quiet.
